Human studies are conducted in the Clinical Research Unit of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC).  

  • 2- Logiq 7 high-resolution ultrasound machines (GE Healthcare, Inc.) with vascular and cardiac package, 3 lead ECG leads, 9-15 MHz linear matrix transducer for vascular (brachial, carotid artery) imaging, and 2-4 MHz sector transducer for cardiac echo imaging
  • Vascular Analysis Tools 5.5 image analysis software (Medical Imaging Applications, LLC) equipped with Top Performance Analysis Integrated System, HD vascular imager and frame grabber (DICOM, Rosslyn, VA), and vascular ECG-gating module, Accusync 71 3-lead ECG trigger
  • 2- automatic cuff inflators (EC-20), 2 air compressors(AG101), and pediatric cuffs for brachial artery FMD studies (Hokansen, Inc.)
  • 2- Noninvasive Hemodynamics pulse wave analysis workstation (Cardiovascular Engineering, Inc.) with automated blood pressure cuff, interfaced with Dell laptop, and custom tonometer
  • 2- Noninvasive Sphygmocor pulse wave analysis systems (AtCor Medical, Inc.) interfaced with Dell laptop and software, and Millar applanation tonometer
  • 4- 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring systems, cuffs, and Report Management software (Space Labs Healthcare, Inc.)
  • 4- Mobil-0-graph 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring systems (IEM, Inc.)
  • 4- Venous occlusion EC-6 plethysmographs, cuffs, rapid inflators, strain gauges (Hokensan, Inc) for forearm blood flow studies; IV pumps
  • Dinamap Pro300 blood pressure machine (GE Healthcare, Inc)
  • PowerLab data acquisition module and LabChart software (ADInstruments, Inc.)

Ex vivo molecular studies in primary isolated endothelial cells from humans and in vitro studies from commercially available human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) are performed in our cell culture (518 FH) and wet lab (522 FH) in the Department of Health and Human Physiology.

We also use various core lab facilities on the UI campus including assessments of gene expression in the DNA core facility, confocal imaging of cells in the Central Microscopy Core lab, and in vitro measurements of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species in the Free Radical Research Core lab.
